Jenny and Jamie loved their house. Parts of it, though, were tired and not working the way they needed for their family - and the kitchen was the clearest example of this.

Small, dark and cramped, it didn’t give them the space to cook together, and it felt disconnected from the older-style quality that ran through the rest of the home.

With some structural ingenuity — removing a corner wall carrying two storeys above it — we were able to extend the kitchen outwards. Together with the dining space, it now opens to district views and connects directly to the external deck. The opening is made possible by a new bi-folding corner steel door that replaced the supporting corner wall entirely. The door folds back on itself to become a sliding door, sliding away to give a full, uninterrupted external opening. Concealed flyscreens are the final touch — a detail that completes what is one of the most satisfying parts of the project.

Throughout the house, joinery and finishes were designed with details that reinterpret the older character of the home, while new matt black steel windows and doors provide a considered balance between old and new

The finished project has lifted the quality of every space it touched — a home that Jenny and Jamie, and their family, can enjoy together for years to come.
