Upper Avenue

Elly and Julian knew what their family needed but not exactly how to achieve it from their modest federation cottage. Damp and dark, with a dysfunctional rear extension perched high on a very steep block, the house was almost uninhabitable.

Our design largely retained the front cottage, replacing the rear structure with a light-filled contemporary addition built around the family’s needs. The addition projects outwards and down, linking the home to a new rear garden and swimming pool.

The new work is stitched to the old by extending the central hallway right through the house. This culminates in a void above the dining table, positioned in the living area below, drawing the eye down and out over the valley beyond.

The footprint of the house is small but tall, and it’s through this height that natural light and drama enter. Inside, a monochromatic palette is lifted by classic natural stones and timbers, marrying new to old with ease.

The result is exactly what Elly and Julian wanted and needed - a home built not just for now, but for the future.
