Bushfire prone land

Sally and James wanted a home that worked for their family. This meant space to spread out, a backyard made for entertaining, and room for visiting relatives. At first, they imagined a Hamptons-style house, but the Burley Griffin conservation area and the bushland setting called for something more in tune with the surroundings. The final design feels like it belongs here, shaped by the rock and wrapped in materials that settle naturally into the landscape.

Our clients were very hands-on, especially when it came to interiors and materials. Sally became fascinated with German smear brickwork, even tracking down a specialist in Melbourne to get the finish just right. James took charge of the outdoors with a pool, fireplace, and barbecue built for weekend gatherings.

From the outset, Castlepeake’s deep understanding of the local environment and architectural sensitivity to the unique bushland setting were evident.

This house emerges from the rock. The lower-level tucks into the sandstone, its rough-hewn stone cladding blending with the site’s natural outcrops. As the home rises, the materials lighten with brick, lightweight cladding, and expansive glass that draw in the bushland views. Screens and louvres oriented toward the reserve keep things private without shutting out the landscape, while a long, thin roofline grounds the whole form.

The interior takes a more playful turn. Pink micro cement, Venetian plaster, and other textures bring warmth and personality. The layout is designed for both connection and retreat: a parents’ suite tucked away upstairs, kids’ rooms on their own level, and generous guest spaces for visiting family.

Sally and James love their home, and it’s easy to see why. The backyard is where life happens — swimming, cooking, nights by the fire. Inside is full of character, every material telling a story. Sally and James got the best of both worlds: a home that feels like it’s grown from the land and designed for the way they live.

Martin’s vision, professionalism, and problem-solving skills were key to the success of our home. Pip’s input on finishes, colours, and layout helped bring cohesion and warmth to the overall design
