Sussex House brings new life to a 100-year-old interwar bungalow, combining heritage charm with daily family life. Located within the East Epping Heritage Conservation Area, the new addition needed to complement rather than overshadow the original structure.

Despite its generous 1,650m² site, the home wasn’t making the most of this space. Our goal was to unlock its full potential and create a warm, functional home for a growing family.

Other priorities included harnessing more natural light and improving the flow between indoor and outdoor areas, making the space feel more open and connected.

The front of the home was retained and carefully restored, keeping its standout features such as the bay windows and leadlight detailing. A new rear addition, set back from view, introduces steep pitched roofs and slate dormer ends that sit alongside the old structure.

A central courtyard pulls in natural light and draws attention to a striking curved concrete staircase with timber treads and an ornate steel balustrade.

Living and dining spaces now sit along the northern and eastern edges to soak up the sun, while guest rooms and services are tucked to the south. The upper level is dedicated for the family with kids’ bedrooms, a rumpus room, and a master suite.

The material palette nods to the home's heritage — face brick, slate roofing, sandstone cladding, and parquetry flooring — while a darker-toned extension keeps the focus on the original façade.

Sussex House now works for our client’s family life while staying true to its historic roots. Despite council hurdles and COVID lockdowns, the result is a home that feels timeless, warm, and built to last.
