A family of six from Sydney fell in love with Gerringong and wanted a beach house that felt like a true getaway — easy, relaxed, and perfect for entertaining. With four daughters and plenty of visitors, flexibility was a must.

They needed open spaces to socialise, as well as quiet corners to retreat. Our clients trusted us to take the lead, weighing in on key decisions but otherwise letting us shape the design.

We designed a home that captures the essence of beachside living while offering flexible spaces for different weather and social occasions. A ‘channel of space’ runs from the western courtyard, through the living areas, and out to the eastern decks, framing the Werri Beach rock platform.

A ‘floating’ square roof shelters both indoor and outdoor spaces, with highlight windows flooding the interiors with natural light. Living areas open fully to courtyards, creating seamless indoor-outdoor transitions.

The western courtyard features a barbecue and fireplace, ideal for windy days, while the eastern decks take full advantage of the ocean views. A shaded lower-level courtyard provides a cool escape on hot afternoons.

The materials strike a perfect balance between texture and warmth. Outside rough-rendered masonry meets smooth Barestone cladding, while timber adds cosiness inside. Pops of soft blues and greens in the bathrooms and joinery reflect the home’s laid-back, holiday feel.

The house is light, open, and inherently connected to its surroundings. It’s not your typical breezy beach shack — there’s a smart home system, a cellar (Tony’s absolute priority), and even a custom neon-lit bar.

The clients love how the house works for their family, with plenty of communal spaces but also room to retreat. As they put it:

“Mark and the Castlepeake team created an exceptional design for us that allows the family to really enjoy the home, with wonderful open areas as well as separate places to hang out. Castlepeake then managed the build. The excellent design, the attention to detail and the responsiveness were first class.”
