John and Deirdre loved where they lived with its private harbour jetty, stunning views, and northern aspect. But the house itself didn’t make the most of any of it. The existing home was an oversized, uninspired grey box, muddled by a string of poor renovations. It wasn’t doing justice to the setting — or to how they wanted to live.
They wanted a home that made the most of the views, worked for their family, and had plenty of spaces to entertain. A luxurious parent suite was also high on their list.
My favourite days are the ones I spend here with my family. I love the flow, I love the interiors, I love the feel. I just love living here.
- Deirdre & John
To tackle the building’s bulky scale, we introduced strong horizontal lines and a mix of materials — zinc, sandstone, and timber — to break it down and add depth. Curved elements also soften the rigid, boxy form.
Inside, the layout was completely reorganised. The master suite sits on its own level, a private retreat with a terrace and incredible views. Below, the kids have their own space, while the main living areas flow onto expansive terraces. And the rooftop deck is perfect for sunset drinks and special occasions
We also renovated the old stairwell into a striking feature with a skylight that floods the space with natural light.
Thoughtful materials such as super white marble, warm timber floors, and stone cladding keep the interiors calm and sophisticated, allowing the view to take centre stage.
What was once a dull, oversized box is now an entertainer’s dream. The house feels spacious yet welcoming with areas for every occasion. The rooftop deck has become the go-to spot for evening drinks, and the media room gets more use than expected. And Deirdre swears the stairs are the best workout in the house!
