Bushfire prone land
Our clients live high above a steep site in Castlecrag, with a home that looks out over the landscape but never quite touches it. What they wanted was a place to connect to the ground - somewhere to feel part of the bush rather than simply view it from above.
We designed a new outdoor area to sit at the bottom of the property, nestled between natural rock shelves and established native planting. A swimming pool and spa form the heart of the space, with a covered barbeque, fireplace, eating area and sitting areas arranged around it. Together, they create a natural destination for the family to come together - to eat, swim and relax, whether undercover, by the fire or out in the landscape.
Viewed from any angle, the new work reads as an extension of the existing landscape rather than an addition to it. The sheltering roof carries a garden across from an upper level of the site, while sandstone-clad walls extend from the natural sandstone outcrops they sit beside. A concrete seat follows the alignment of a rock shelf running behind it and the barbeque area, with the rock left exposed to form a strong, solid backdrop to the whole space.
Rockpool has become the true heart of the property. Its success is best measured by how often it’s used - for family dinners, weekends with friends, and functions - a place that has given our clients the connection to the ground and to the nature they were after.
