Hillside

A locally listed heritage item on a prominent corner in Mosman, the original house known as 'Hillside' exemplifies the Federation Arts and Crafts Style, having been constructed in 1911. This architectural gem not only reflects the design principles of its time but also holds significant historical value in the community.

Located strategically, 'Hillside' offers iconic views to the Harbour, the Harbour Bridge, and the Opera House to the south-west. These vistas are not only a hallmark of the property but also enhance its status within the area. Its northern neighbours contribute to the scenic panorama, framing the landscape and providing a sense of connection to the surrounding heritage and natural beauty.

Alterations and additions made in the 1980s sought to replicate the original style of the house; however, these efforts lacked clarity and cohesion. The coexistence of the original fabric and the later modifications creates confusion, obscuring the architectural integrity of the residence.

The design of the new pavilion prioritises a sense of openness and accessibility, allowing ample winter sunlight to permeate through northern openings, skylights, and the central courtyard. Its orientation towards the city to the south-west enhances the connection to the surroundings while preserving the existing views enjoyed by neighboring properties.

The pavilion’s low form serves to complement rather than compete with the main house's stature. Additionally, the proposed garden will feature a new swimming pool situated within the side setback area, alongside thoughtfully designed pedestrian entries from both the main and side streets.

The original part of the house holds significant historical value and requires careful restoration to preserve its character. Upgrading the existing amenity will enhance functionality while respecting the architectural heritage.
