A-frame House

Adam and Cassandra loved the bones of their 1960s single-level home but they needed room to grow. Its existing low ceilings felt restrictive, the dim southern bedrooms missed out on bushland views, and the carport was disconnected from the house.

It was clear that the home needed an upper-level addition to accommodate a growing family without losing its original mid-century character.

Going up a level wasn’t straightforward. Height restrictions meant we had to be clever about creating space without blocking the neighbour’s view.

Enter a bold A-frame upper level that rises from the painted brick base, its sharp angles balanced by Scyon cladding, Cerano render, and exposed timber framing.

Projecting boxes add space and frame bushland views, while a curved, wrapping awning expertly connects old and new.

The redesigned entry replaces the old carport, giving the home an imminent sense of arrival.

At the eastern end, an unclad A-frame screen defines the roof terrace, ready for garden climbers to weave through and soften the façade.

Honey-toned oak timber floors, stairs, and wall panelling contrast the crisp white interior. Exposed ceiling joists on the lower level add character and much needed head height.

Upstairs, bedrooms now open to northern bushland, filling each space with light and rustling treetop views.

This project was a team effort. Cassandra, an interior designer, took the lead on handpicking the finishes, shaping interiors that feel warm, refined, and unmistakably personal. The home now feels bigger, brighter, and ready for the chaos of family life.

Although we faced challenges with height restrictions and planning approvals, we stayed focused on our vision to create a home that feels effortless and welcoming and evolves with the family.
