The Turret
The Griffin Heritage Conservation Area is defined by its winding street pattern, rugged rock outcrops and dense bushland. The original ideal for residential development in Castlecrag was for it to harmonise with the landscape as a push back against the rectilinear pattern and red tiled roofs of the traditional suburb. This house seeks to embrace these principles and further add to the sense of place they help foster. A significant rock outcrop to the south west of the site provides a grounding for the building when seen from below over winding bush paths and native landscaping which melds into the nature reserve to the west. The lower 2 levels are tucked into the rear of the rockface, with an upper level addressing the existing flat topography to the rear of the site. Screens running the length of the rear yard and pool adjoining a public reserve seek to balance views, connection and privacy. The material pallette draws on the colours and textures of the surrounding natural environment.
