Rockpool
On a steep north facing site far below an existing house, a swimming pool and pavilion are set into the embankment of a Castlecrag garden. Amid a rock outcrop a distance from the house, the site is a ‘destination’, with cooking, eating and open fire areas providing gathering spaces in addition to the swimming pool and spa. The area is grounded in the garden and provides an alternative to the elevated spaces contained within the house above. The pavilion is defined by a roof with a form to match the language of the projecting balconies overhead. This roof abuts higher ground and provides a plane to extend the garden, further enhancing integration into the site when viewed from the house and access stairs above. The horizontal roof form is structurally supported by a vertical chimney clad in sandstone. Apart from being structural and operational as a fire place, this element visually balances the composition of the structure and upwardly extends the sandstone in the adjacent garden walls.
