Weemala
A new build on a steep site in Northbridge, Weemala’s overall form is treated as four separate parts, stacked to control the massing height, and to reflect the programme of the house. Heavy landscape is contained within anchoring stone-walled terraces bordering the tall entry up from the street. The batten-screened base makes a monolithic form containing the internal entry along with a gym, study and cellar, and access to the garage.
The open off-form concrete living level protrudes out from the base, opening out to a generous deck with water views to the south and an elevated horizontal courtyard to the north. This openness is in deliberate contrast to the more enclosed base, and sleeping quarters above and below.
The sinuous upper level sits neatly on top, jutting past the lower living section in front, and narrowing towards the back as it overhangs beside the existing pool, to provide external openness, maximising the exposure to northern light and offering shelter for an undercover dining area. As the courtyard breaks away against the house we come full circle, following the passage of light down into the circulation areas of the base.
