Split House
Designed to relate to a challenging site, the house is split into two double storey pavilions linked by a split level circulation zone. The higher pavilion contains living areas while the lower contains bedrooms. The main living area opens completely on two sides to take in north easterly views towards Manly. Materials of stone, board and timber are evocative of a modern beachhouse while materials from the demolished house including sandstone and brickwork were recycled for some of the structure which was exposed at the lower level of the house. A drainage easement, a sewer main, an awkward cross fall and limited access at the end of a cul-d-sac provided challenges.
