Manly House 3
Located on the flat in Manly to the rear of the beach, this small site is half the size of its neighbours as a result of subdivision. The challenge of increasing floor area while preserving the original cottage presented the opportunity to build a new 2 storey structure to the rear. The upper level houses a master bedroom, robe and ensuite, with carefully selected openings providing curated views to an existing stand of palm trees to the rear boundary while preserving privacy from other 2 storey dwellings in close proximity. Northern light penetrates deep into the living space, over the roof of the cottage. The additions appear to watch over the existing cottage, with the materiality and colour selection tying the 2 distinct forms of new and old together visually.
