Hardys' Ridge
A complete overhaul was required for this dilapidated house sitting over ten metres below street level and trapped in the shade by large trees and a neighbouring hill.
The internal programme is rationalised to take advantage of the views and introduce natural light, while also providing access to street level by both lift and stair. Additions include bedrooms and a bathroom, with the existing splayed geometry of the house used to inform the upper level and void, which provides access to the northern light deep into the main living space. The complicated roof forms are simplified, and a new seperate study and gym pavilion, overlooking the new house to views beyond, has a greater sense of connection to the bushland.
Finding a suitable location for the lift was perhaps the greatest challenge, with the requirement to retain the view and minimise the visual impact of the shaft. The solution was to utilise the oversized existing garage, which was cut into the site, to inform the new entry and lift and ensure no interruption of prospect or natural light. This also allowed for new vertical circulation along southern edge of the dwelling.
