Coolawin House
The Northbridge house was designed to meet the needs of a young family while taking in views to spit bridge and a northerly aspect. A scenic protection zone and a view corridor from rear properties dictated the need for an efficient form and layout. Circulation space is minimal and positioned along the south side of the building to maximise the orientation of living areas to north and view. A narrow swimming pool and spa separated by an elevated deck, run along the north side of the house. These elements push the main structure back from the northern boundary. This negates the impact of shadow cast by the northern neighbour, maintains the views of the rear neighbours, fulfils the family's requirement for a swimming pool / spa and provides a focus from the main areas of the house. A separate rumpus room opens completely to a rear courtyard and garden space beyond. The courtyard doubles the size of the rumpus room below the cantilevered upper level. The main living space opens to the north and east to pool and terrace respectively. Bedrooms at the upper level run along the northern side of the house with projected bays at the northern sides angled to take in the view while providing privacy.
