Artarmon House 2
Located within a Heritage Conservation Area, the site contains a modest bungalow typical of the surrounding locality. The design approach was to preserve the existing bungalow (with the exception of the rear lean to) and contrast this to a modern addition, concealed to the rear when viewed from the street. The new section of the building is clearly identifiable from the current house in terms of form, whilst using elements of the heritage material palette to help create a dialogue between new and old. The brief involved providing additional space for the owners growing family, whilst taking advantage of northern light and improving the relationship of living spaces to the rear yard. The master bedroom cantilevers over the lower level to the rear, providing a visually dramatic form while creating outdoor entertaining area accessed off the main living spaces. The northern courtyard provides an interesting space to look into from both new and old parts of the building.
