A-Frame house
The site is located at the end of a quiet cul-d-sac in Riverview. The existing house had a simple 1960s linear layout opening out to a private northern garden which drops into a reserve below. The new works provide additional bedrooms, bathrooms and a second living space in an upper level A-frame form that sits upon the existing lower floor plate. The upper form breaks down at the eastern end of the house into a roof deck delineated at the street edge by an 'unclad A-frame' screen. Garden climbers are proposed to weave through the frame to bring landscaping to the upper level and provide a green enclosure to the terrace. Height was a challenge on the site to preserve a neighbour's outlook. This created the need to find internal height through exposed ceiling joists at the lower level and thoughtful roof pitching points at the upper level; both of which subsequently add positively to the new aesthetic of the house.
